Choose a window company with a reputation as transparent as their double glazing.
Buying windows, doors, or a new conservatory is a considerable investment, and you’ll want to know that you’re getting the best quality materials, installation, and aftercare for your money. However, in such a competitive sector, it can be easy to fall prey to misleading claims or dishonest sales techniques that make it seem like you’re getting a good deal when, in reality, you may be being vastly overcharged for poor service or substandard materials.
Selling is a vital part of business, but unfortunately, unethical selling practices still exist, from scams to pressured selling and cold calling.
At Thermaglaze, we’ve been selling double-glazing, doors, and conservatories in Somerset, Wiltshire, and Dorset for over 30 years, and we’ve learnt a thing or two about spotting a rogue deal or aggressive sales technique. Read on to help identify the green and red flags you should look for when purchasing new windows and doors.
Shady sales. Did you know that even big-name companies still rely on dated sales tactics to try and secure your business? Limited-time deals, negotiations, secretive calls to the ‘boss’, and overly generous ‘discounts’ are all warning signs that you may be being roped into a high-pressure sale. This type of selling is a dated technique designed to make you believe you’re getting a great discount. In reality, it’s a way of applying pressure in a short time frame with prices that were vastly inflated to begin with.
Common scams. Receiving a cold call informing you that you qualify for a government-backed scheme sound familiar? Few of these are genuine, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone will seek you out to tell you. If you are approached by anyone telling you otherwise, they may be after your financial details or say you’ve passed the eligibility check before asking for a deposit that you can claim back later. Unfortunately, you aren’t likely to see that money again. You can check your eligibility for the HUG2 or EC04 scheme with your local council.
What are the red flags?
- Beware of anyone asking you to pay or sign a contract immediately. A reputable company will always give you time to think over your quote without adding pressure through time narrow time frames.
- Calls to ‘the boss’. ‘Let me talk to my boss to see if I can get you a better deal’. Don’t be fooled by this tactic, designed to bring down a vastly inflated starting price and trick you into thinking you’re getting a fantastic deal.
- Fearmongering or guilt-tripping. Another high-pressure tactic a salesperson that uses fear to manipulate a sale by playing on your emotions should be shown the door immediately.
What are the green flags?
- Read the reviews. They are often the best way to spot reoccurring positive or negative factors. A reputable company will be transparent and happy to display its reviews.
- Look for proper certification. CERTASS and FENSA are the two most recognised companies in the UK.
- A ten-year guarantee. A reputable business will offer an insurance-backed ten-year guarantee that covers you even if the trader stops trading.
- Transparent terms and conditions. A trustworthy company will have their terms and conditions readily available and free from uncomplicated jargon.
- A fully itemised quotation that includes installation, materials, and labour. Any genuine discounts, referral details, and complete details of your guarantee should be included.
- Active listening. A genuine salesperson will actively listen to your needs and offer solutions.
